Design With Clarity, Purpose and Practicality

At Maison Bretagne, design is not treated as a separate stage from renovation. It is part of the same journey.

A successful renovation begins with understanding how a property should look, feel and function — but also what is realistic for the building, the budget and the works required.

Our design process is built around the Maison Bretagne C.R.A.F.T Method: Clarity, Realism, Accountability, Flexibility and Transparency. This means we help clients make considered decisions early, reduce uncertainty and create a clear design direction before the renovation moves forward on site.

Whether you are renovating an old stone house, longère, holiday home, gîte or character property in Brittany, our design team helps bring together layout, flow, finishes, materials and practical renovation planning.

YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE

1

Discovery

We begin by understanding your property, your lifestyle, your priorities and your design aspirations.

This stage allows us to explore how you want the space to work, what matters most to you and what level of renovation you are considering. We also discuss budget expectations, timescales and any practical constraints from the beginning.

2

Feasibility

Once we understand your vision, we look at what is realistic.

Older properties in France often come with structural, technical, planning or budget considerations that need to be understood before design decisions are taken too far. At this stage, we consider the relationship between your ideas, the condition of the building and the investment required.

This helps ensure the design direction is not only beautiful, but achievable.

3

Spatial Planning

We then develop the layout and flow of the property.

This may include 2D plans, room layouts, furniture positioning, kitchen planning, bathroom layouts or improved circulation between spaces. The aim is to make the property work better for modern living while respecting its character and existing structure.

Good spatial planning helps avoid costly changes later.

4

Visual Design

Once the layout is clearer, we help translate the design direction into a more visual form.

Depending on the project, this may include mood boards, material palettes, colour schemes, 3D visuals, lighting ideas, fixtures, fittings and finish selections. This stage helps clients see how the project will feel before decisions are finalised.

It also creates coherence across the renovation, so each room feels connected to the overall vision.

5

Specification & Design Freeze

Before construction progresses, key design decisions need to be confirmed.

This includes finishes, sanitaryware, tiles, flooring, lighting, kitchen details, paint colours, ironmongery and client-supplied items. We call this the Design Freeze stage because it brings clarity to the project before orders are placed and works are sequenced.

Clear decisions at this stage help protect the budget, programme and quality of the final result.

6

Design Support During Works

Even with careful planning, renovation projects can evolve once works begin.

Hidden building conditions, supplier availability or practical site discoveries may require design decisions to be reviewed. Our design and construction teams work together throughout the project to respond to these moments clearly and professionally.

This ensures that changes are managed with transparency and that the finished renovation remains true to the original vision.

A Joined-Up Approach

Our design process is not just about choosing colours or finishes.

It is about creating a clear bridge between your ideas, the building’s character, the practical renovation works and the final result.

By combining design, construction knowledge and local experience, Maison Bretagne helps clients move from inspiration to implementation with greater confidence.
